Why do I keep suffering from trapped wind?

greasy foods

There are a number of reasons why you may be suffering from trapped wind, but that doesn’t mean it should be a cause for concern. There are three main reasons for your trapped wind, and albeit

an uncomfortable and awkward feeling, it is very common in a lot of people.

You are eating too quickly

When you eat too fast, you end up not only swallowing your food, but end up swallowing lots of air too. You will feel the collection of air in the upper part of your stomach, which can result in burping or the feeling of being overwhelmingly full.

Food intolerances

If you suffer from a food intolerance, you will feel a bloating or cramp-like feeling in your lower stomach. This is because the good bacteria in your gut struggles to break down and process the food that you are intolerant to during the digestion process. This produces gas which can result in trapped wind.

Too much artificial sugars

Fizzy drinks, chewing gum and other artificial sugars can be tricky for our stomach to digest, and some, such as sorbitol, cannot be digested, which can cause trapped wind. They cause trapped wind because, due to them being hard to digest, they move through the digestive system without being broken down, and as the bacteria in digestive system comes into contact with these sugars, it causes gas.

How long will my trapped wind last?woman suffering from stomach pain

There is no real time frame for trapped wind and how long it will last, but most symptoms will go away within a day or so. However, if you are struggling with long term symptoms of trapped wind and feel as though your symptoms are getting worse, and have already tried a few dietary changes, then seek advice from your doctor.

Trapped wind is usually harmless, and is nothing to be too concerned about, as it is just a natural part of the digestion process. But, if you are worried and are struggling with day-to-day activities due to cramps or discomfort, then seek medical advice before trying any at home remedies, supplements or medications.
